She graduated in June 2023 and less than a week later, she found herself at the same table as the managing board of De Mandemakers Groep. Okay, okay, not immediately as a board member, but you will never know what the future will bring. Eva graduated in Business Administration and in the same week she started working as a business analyst. One of her first projects was in collaboration with Dennis Mandemakers; you could say it’s a great start of her career.
‘’I wasn’t thinking about work, but it suddenly crossed my path’’
Actually, I wasn’t really thinking about working yet. But during my study, I suddenly saw a post on LinkedIn that caught my attention. It was a vacancy for a junior business analyst at De Mandemakers Groep. I thought, ‘’This is what I like’’, even though it was a little bit early. Nevertheless, I took the plunge and applied for the job even before I graduated.
And it worked out successfully. De Mandemakers Groep was confident about it and had trust in me that I would complete my study in time. That’s how I ended up here, even before graduating.
‘’I realized after my graduation that I was no longer an intern’’
I was happy to not have school projects anymore, but I needed to get used to the fact that I was no longer an intern and starting a career. Everything was much less defined than I expected, you get a lot of freedom to figure things out and learn on your own. You are also encouraged to develop yourself more and more. For example, with a personal budget I can take a course that I find interesting and that suits me, this way I keep growing in my specialization. We work in a young and dynamic team and the organization feels like a family business. That is what I really like about working here, and what suits me.
‘’I prefer working at the office, instead of working from home’’
As a business analyst, you are the bridge between what the business requests and the translation to the technical details. For example, I am currently writing a user story detailing what text we want to show when the customer signs for delivery of his/her kitchen. It may sound simple, but it contains many different scenarios, business requirements and technical dependencies. And all of that has to be implemented in the app within a predetermined time frame.
At team Tech & Digital, we follow an Agile-scrum approach. That means we always work in two-week sprints. As a business analyst, we guide this process in collaboration with the product owner, and together, we ensure that the business' wishes are translated into functionalities. Within two weeks, the development team builds and delivers parts of those functionalities. Within the team there is a lot of freedom on when and where you work. You can schedule your own times and work from home, but honestly I prefer to work in the office. I really like that more for the connection with the team.
‘’I like being the bridge between De Mandemakers Groep and Avans University of Applied Science’’
I noticed that the focus of Business Administration is mainly on improvement using regular tools and theories and less through digitalization in a company. Instead, my interest lies in data-driven and smarter working. Anyway, my job is not one hundred percent in line with the profile of Business Administration. As far as I am concerned, there is still a lot to gain there and in the future I would like to be the bridge between De Mandemakers Groep and Avans for interns, but also for assignments towards the study.
